Three Foods For Healthy Teeth and Gums?

Keep Your Teeth and Gums Healthy With These Three Foods!

Often times you just hear about how much you should be brushing and flossing to maintain good oral hygiene, but did you know that your diet can play a huge roll in the health of your teeth and gums? Well, if you didn’t, we are here to fill you in! Along with daily brushing and flossing, keep these foods in mind the next time you get hungry.

1. Fatty Fish: Salmon and mackerel are two of the best food sources for Vitamin D. Vitamin D is crucial for oral health because it allows your body to absorb Calcium. Calcium is the nutrient that protects your gums and teeth from disease. Foods rich in Vitamin D make it easier for your teeth to reap the full benefits of the Calcium you intake from other foods.

2. Cheese: is a low acid food and studies have shown that eating a serving a day helps neutralize plaque acid in the mouth. Acidic foods breakdown tooth enamel and cheese can help lessen the effects of this. Cheese also increases saliva production which is effective for washing bacteria out of the mouth. Of course, as it’s a dairy product, cheese is also high in Calcium and Vitamin D!

3. Citrus Fruits: Foods high in Vitamin C help maintain the overall health of gum tissue. It helps bolster the presence of collagen within the gums and thus makes them less susceptible to gum disease. When collagen breaks down, gums can become tender and swollen. These fruits are also helpful in reducing discoloration of the teeth that certain beverages like pop or coffee can cause.
